Choice is always a balance between desired performance features, size, weight, and cost. This guide will help you decide the best balance for you.

Breathable or lightweight fabric?

Breathable cotton/polyester (cp) lets condensation out providing a much more comfortable atmosphere inside a tent in all climates.  However, this is especially valuable in cold weather when warm, moist air - such as your breath, or steam from boiling water - would otherwise build up on the walls of the tent as condensation.  Only a breathable fabric prevents this condensation inside the tent.  Tents made of cp material provide an unbeatable atmosphere and are ideal when used in a stationary or base camp, or when the load can be shared between members of a group when hiking.

Lightweight fabric (light):  High quality nylon fabrics are much lighter and pack up smaller than cp fabrics. Coated nylon fabrics don't provide as cozy an atmosphere as cp, however, they are completely waterproof even in driving rain and snow.  Choose (light) fabrics when size and carry weight are of paramount importance.

Tip: Choose cotton/polyester (cp) fabric unless you are hiking or backpacking, only if you will be carrying the tent long distances.

How big should it be?

Use our floor plans and images to visualize the space you need. Think how far you must carry the tent and how many people there are to help. Also, a bigger tent is more sensitive to snow and extreme winds.

Tip: If you are not limited by weight and the threat of extreme weather, think bigger for the extra comfort.

 How much should I spend?

Tentipi Nordic tipis are expensive, but they provide so much more than a normal tent. Once you use and experience the unique design features in a Tentipi Nordic tipi, you'll never want to be without them again.  It's a comfortable home in your backpack, rather than just flimsy roof over your head.

Onyx is an outstanding lightweight tent, ideal for backpacking, and will cope with almost anything the elements can throw at it. But if you need better ventilation features or more extreme materials, choose Zirkon or Safir.

Tip: If you like both backpacking as well as traditional base camping , and if you can afford it, choose a smaller-size Safir light, plus a bigger Safir cp to cover both needs instead of compromising.
